Problem

The canteen in JJ College of Architecture in Mumbai was outdated and did not reflect the history and heritage of the college. The previous design did not inspire students to spend time there and lacked functionality. Additionally, the materials used were not sustainable or environmentally friendly.

We wanted to create a space that would honor the college's history while also providing a functional and sustainable environment for students to gather and enjoy meals.

Solution

We decided to use wood as the primary material for the canteen's design, taking inspiration from the Kipling bungalow on campus. We worked with local craftsmen to source sustainable wood and create custom furniture pieces that would fit seamlessly into the space.

In addition to using sustainable materials, we also incorporated eco-friendly features such as solar panels for energy and a rainwater harvesting system. The new design included ample seating options, charging stations, and a functional kitchen area that could accommodate large groups of students at once.
