Background

The development of drug resistance in HIV patients is a major challenge in the treatment of the disease. Nelfinavir (NFV) is a protease inhibitor drug that has been used to treat HIV for many years. However, mutations in the virus can lead to resistance to NFV, making it less effective. Our team was tasked with investigating the effect of various mutations on NFV-specific PI inhibitor drug resistance and developing models to predict patterns of drug resistance.

Problem

The problem we faced was how to identify which mutations in the virus were responsible for drug resistance and how these mutations affected the efficacy of NFV. We needed to develop a model that could predict patterns of drug resistance based on the presence or absence of specific mutations. This would help clinicians make more informed decisions about which drugs to prescribe and avoid prescribing drugs that are unlikely to be effective.

Solution

To address this problem, we used fuzzy and neural network algorithms to analyze data from clinical trials and laboratory experiments. We identified specific mutations that were associated with drug resistance and developed models that could predict patterns of resistance based on the presence or absence of these mutations. We also conducted a poster presentation on our findings, which helped raise awareness among clinicians about the importance of monitoring for specific mutations when treating HIV patients with NFV.
