Problem

The Kenyan Judiciary was experiencing slower case resolutions due to resource constraints, paper based systems, and lack of actionable insights. in particular, paper based records, a traditional method of recording and tracking mediation records was time-consuming and inefficient. This resulted in a higher backlog of cases and increased workload for court staff.

Solution

I designed a mediation platform for the Kenyan Judiciary that digitized court mediation records and processes. By digitizing these records and processes, we reduced case pendency in the courts, resulting in faster resolution times and improved efficiency.

Impact

As of May 2023, Cadaster has successfully tracked a total of 12,853 cases referred for mediation.
1,166 mediators have been accredited by the Mediation Accreditation Committee (MAC).
Reduction is data quality issues from 73% of cases to under 2% of cases.
Increased mediator referral to appointment time from 16 days to 5 days over 1 year.
Cadaster has become an essential platform for day-to-day operations of the mediation teams for over 100 court stations.

Responsibilities

Worked closely with a software engineer and economist to detail user stories
Designed high fidelity wireframes using the Material Design library
Conducted remote, moderated usability testing with users in Kenya.
Configured Hotjar on the production site to allow users to provide real time feedback and heatmap their experience
Provided UX recommendations based on user feedback and usability testing.
Conduct training workshops with Judiciary in Kenya and assist in building UX capacity.
Ongoing support and UX improvements in relation to bugs and new feature development
