Problem

At Bilzin Sumberg, practice groups use an internal webpage that holds all their client and matter information, as well as easy access to external sites. Partners want their legal teams to keep using their favorite features but also consider newer additions which would be of higher-impact to their daily work. The challenge was to develop a live dashboard for partners to track user activity and assess what features on the page are being used.

The existing webpage had many features in the form of search facets and widgets. It was important to identify which features were being used by employees daily and remove unpopular ones to make room for high-impact additions. This required data preparation, cleansing, integration into Power BI, ETL processes, and data modeling.

Solution

To achieve this goal, we used master data found in SQL tables containing employee data, user activity on page, and keywords. After data preparation and cleansing, we integrated these tables into Power BI where we carried additional ETL processes and data modeling.

We monitored KPIs by tracking monthly user activity, returning users, and search sessions when creating charts and graphs. With the dashboard complete, we updated partners on findings on a quarter-by-quarter basis. We were able to clearly identify where users spent most of their time every day and which features were not being used anymore.
