Problem

The construction industry is responsible for a significant amount of energy consumption and carbon emissions, making it crucial to prioritize sustainable design. However, many buildings still prioritize aesthetics and functionality over environmental responsibility. This project aims to address this issue by creating a residential building and office block that prioritize energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and environmental responsibility. To achieve this goal, the project adheres to the standards set by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The design team integrates various analyses such as daylight simulation, glare analysis, and shadow study to optimize natural lighting, reduce energy consumption, and enhance the well-being of occupants. Solution

To create a sustainable residential building and office block, the design team prioritizes energy efficiency while maintaining occupant comfort. By strategically placing windows, skylights, and light shelves throughout the building's interior spaces, natural light penetration is maximized while minimizing artificial lighting during the day. This approach not only reduces energy usage but also improves occupants' visual comfort and connection to nature. Daylight simulation tools are employed to evaluate light levels within the building throughout the year. This analysis allows for precise adjustment of window sizes, shading devices, and interior finishes to optimize daylight utilization while minimizing glare. Glare analysis ensures that direct sunlight does not cause discomfort or hinder visual tasks. Shadow studies are conducted to assess surrounding buildings' shading effects and vegetation's impact on solar heat gain. The design team strategically places shading devices or landscaping elements to minimize direct solar heat gain while maintaining desirable views and access to natural light. Additionally, other sustainable features aligned with LEED certification are incorporated into the project. These include energy-efficient HVAC systems that reduce energy consumption while providing a comfortable indoor climate, renewable energy integration, water conservation, and sustainable materials selection.
