Our team was tasked with managing and configuring multiple virtual machines for a web server project. The process of manually setting up each machine was time-consuming and prone to errors, leading to delays in the project timeline.

To address this issue, we needed to find a way to automate the configuration and management of these virtual machines while ensuring that all necessary software and services were installed correctly.

Solution

We developed a Vagrant script that automated the creation and configuration of three Ubuntu virtual machines, with one acting as a web server and two as web clients. This allowed us to quickly set up the necessary infrastructure for our project without having to manually configure each machine.

To manage the virtual machines, we utilized Netmiko in a Python script. This allowed us to add users, manage group memberships, and retrieve system details across all three machines. We also developed a custom Python module using Paramiko for SSH management, which enabled us to handle services like Apache2 and MySQL on the virtual machines. Finally, we used SCP for secure data transfers between host and VMs.
