Problem

As a teachers' assistant for the Cybersecurity Fundamentals course at Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology, we noticed that many students struggled with understanding the practical applications of the concepts they were learning. While they had a good grasp of the theoretical knowledge, they lacked hands-on experience to truly understand how cybersecurity worked in real-world scenarios.

We knew that this was a problem because cybersecurity is an increasingly important field, and it's essential that students have both theoretical and practical knowledge to succeed in their careers.

Solution

To address this problem, we decided to create a cybersecurity lab where students could gain hands-on experience with different cybersecurity tools and techniques. We worked closely with industry professionals to identify the most important skills for students to learn and designed lab exercises that would help them develop those skills.

The lab was equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software, including virtual machines running different operating systems and network configurations. Students were able to practice penetration testing, vulnerability scanning, network analysis, and other key skills in a safe environment.
