Problem

Our team was tasked with synthesizing an azo molecule for Molecular Rectifier applications. The challenge was to design the molecule according to Aviram Ratner model for Rectifier, characterize it using NMR, IR and UV-Vis, and try preparing thin films on ITO and silicon substrate.

We faced several obstacles during the project. Firstly, designing the molecule according to Aviram Ratner model required a deep understanding of molecular electronics. Secondly, characterizing the synthesized molecule using NMR, IR and UV-Vis techniques was time-consuming and required expertise. Lastly, preparing thin films on ITO and silicon substrate proved to be challenging due to the complex nature of the synthesized molecule.

Solution

To overcome these challenges, we adopted a collaborative approach that involved teamwork and constant communication. We divided ourselves into sub-teams that focused on specific aspects of the project such as designing the molecule, characterizing it using NMR, IR and UV-Vis techniques, and preparing thin films on ITO and silicon substrate.

We also leveraged our expertise in molecular electronics to design a novel azo molecule that met Aviram Ratner model requirements. To characterize the synthesized molecule using NMR, IR and UV-Vis techniques efficiently, we optimized our protocols by streamlining sample preparation methods. Lastly, we successfully prepared thin films on ITO and silicon substrate by optimizing deposition parameters such as temperature and pressure.
