Problem

Adult refugees often encounter language barriers that hinder their job prospects. Recognizing this, I identified the need for a learning design program aimed at enhancing their English skills and thereby increasing their chances of finding employment.

While refugees typically receive primary support for essentials like food and shelter, educational assistance is often given lower priority. Children usually receive age-appropriate school-related support, but educational aid for adults is frequently overlooked. Nevertheless, conquering language barriers is vital for refugees to secure employment and establish a stable foundation for their lives.

Many existing language learning programs are not tailored to the individualized needs of adult refugees, who require personalized English lessons. Organizations like NGOs often lack the necessary resources, including funds and staff, to meet these personalized requirements. In addition, it is difficult for adults to attend workshops and classes because they usually have jobs or take care of their families.

Solution

I developed a strategy for organizations like NGOs to harness AI for providing refugees with personalized English learning content at a reasonable cost. The designed program involves an offline workshop that instructs individuals on how to utilize chatGPT for independent learning at home. Recognizing that certain challenges, such as those faced by refugees, cannot be effectively addressed solely through AI, the primary aim was to engage participants in face-to-face workshops, where they can openly discuss the limitations of this approach.
