Problem

Our team was tasked with creating a comprehensive lesson plan. We created a lesson plan geared towards undergraduate college student teachers in a pedagogy class focusing on math. The lesson plan had to be implemented in an elementary school context where the student teachers were placed during the day. The challenge was to create a two-part lesson plan that would be taught over 150 minutes and would include warm-up activities, videos or case studies, class discussions, and wrap-up activities.

The lesson plan had to meet specific objectives, including defining misconceptions, identifying reasons why it is necessary to consider children's possible misconceptions during learning, responding to children's questions and confusion using various strategies, and re-teaching a math concept to an AI Simulator acting as a confused 3rd grader.

Solution

To create the lesson plan, we used chatGPT as our primary tool. We started by dividing the 150-minute session into two parts of 75 minutes each. Each part of the lesson included warm-up activities that reflected on students' schema and learning journals. We also included videos or case studies, class discussions (think-pair-share style), and wrap-up activities.

We ensured that all objectives were met by creating four different rows in our chart format. Row one stated the length of time spent on each activity in the lesson. Row two stated which objectives drove the instruction. Row three stated the activities involved in each part of the lesson while row four provided suggestions for formative assessments of each activity.
