Comments and reflections

I think to get the AI to come in the structure was very difficult and specially to ask it to go in depth around the pedagogy took multiple iterations of prompt.
It was a fun experience to see how AI will generate an AI however the time taken to create a prompt was way higher to what it would take an experienced teacher to build a lesson plan.

The prompt assigned 4 tasks to ChatGPT.
1. Deliver a lesson plan.
2. Lesson plan should have 6 headers/sections.

My observations:

ChatGPT covered all four of the assigned tasks. This is different to what I’ve seen in past experiments. Perhaps, because the prompt was thorough, it had clear defined tasks.
The format of the lesson plan was spot on. It had clearly defined headers, exact to a comprehensive lesson plan a teacher would be creating. It used all the mediums defined.
The lesson plan that I received from ChatGPT3.5 and what my team member received, were different (e.g example of f(x) of x^2), despite the prompt being the same. It could be based on past use of ChatGPT, or because my team member was developing the prompt and my use of it was clean/one-shot. Not sure.

Reflections

In the beginning, I was personally blown over by the lesson plan it generated. I tried to change the prompt for various other subjects (like Science semiconductors, and Physics Laws of Motion). Some of the things that surfaced:

The lesson plan is very generic and a lot of details would still need to be added, like concrete examples or questions.
The lesson plan is common, whether taught in India or in Texas, or in California. It is also common for public schools and private school students. It does not take into account prior expertise or knowledge or learning capabilities of children. There may be more that a teacher needs to talk about before explaining the complex subjects of calculus or semiconductors.
The lesson plan was extremely vague for semiconductors, but the lesson plan for calculus (derivatives, integrals) was relatively better. Perhaps, ChatGPT is more well-versed with Maths and mathematical concepts.
I wonder how the lesson plan would be changed if the teacher is on Step 2 of teaching calculus. My prompt would get more and more complex. The teacher might find it easier to hand-write the lesson plan.
I wonder who would be the end-user of this AI lesson plan generator. The teachers’ lesson plans are way-more capable of delivering exact value for their precise audience of students. This is a great game play for techies who’re exploring the capabilities of GenAI.
