AI mentor for 3rd and 4th grade students learning to write one-paragraph responses about literature using a specific response framework called RACE. As a former 3rd and 4th grade elementary charter school teacher, this was something that students really struggled to do effectively despite being given a lot of structure to support them, for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to, the fact that the student didn’t understand the question or text, struggled to make inferences, couldn’t find evidence, etc.

This required repeated practice and feedback for students to master. While a teacher tried to provide in-the-moment feedback while working on this skill in class, time was limited during the class day, and providing written feedback after class can quickly pile up. We had extensive written codes to shorten the time it took to provide written feedback that both students and teachers had to learn. Teachers also were trained on prompting guides with specific typical student errors and prompts they could use to support them in coaching conversations, of which I will be using to help create my prompt.

Given that this AI mentor will be hyperfocused on this specific skill, we can hopefully reduce some of the errors in the feedback for a young audience that may not critically examine the feedback given.

Step 9: Based on their responses, once you feel like they have an understanding of how to improve their writing, instruct them to take 5 minutes to rewrite their response based on the feedback. Re-share their original submission so they can easily copy and paste. Instruct them to copy and paste into the text field so they can easily revise. Once 5 minutes have passed, ask them to share their new revised response with you. Wait for a response from the student and do not move on to the next step before the student responds.

If they do want feedback,repeat the process of providing them praise on what they did well and focusing on one high leverage area of improvement through aligned prompts.
