Problem

The insufficient number of bilingual teachers in many parts of the world like US, Mexico and China, and lack of support for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners is a problem of concern that needs to be addressed. Young learners often find themselves at a critical stage in their education and second language acquisition, as they transition to more advanced academic subjects or English language classes without having advanced sufficiently to be able to grasp or interact with more difficult ESL content. ESL support is essential for students in such situation. The challenge lies in providing them with the necessary tools and resources to succeed in their studies while overcoming language barriers. Many students face language barriers when trying to understand classroom concepts. This can lead to a lack of engagement and comprehension, which in turn can result in disengagement. We recognize this issue and wanted to find a solution that would provide students with access to effective explanations and interactions in their native languages.

We knew that traditional methods of language learning, such as hiring translators or providing language classes, were not always feasible or effective. We needed a solution that was a lot more personalized, accessible, and scalable.

Solution

To address this problem, we developed an AI assistant that served as a personalized language mentor for students. The AI assistant was equipped with natural language processing and machine learning capabilities that allowed it to communicate effectively with students in their preferred languages while providing them the necessary help and practice in the English language.

The AI assistant provides explanations, answers questions, and offers support to students in real-time. It is available 24/7 and can be accessed from any device with an internet connection. This makes it easy for students to get the help they need whenever they need it.

Team Member #1 - Problem Researcher

Conducted extensive research to identify the problem at hand, which was the lack of access to teachers who could effectively explain classroom concepts in students' native languages. My role was to understand the challenges and barriers faced by students in this context.

Team Member #2 - AI Assistant Developer

Focused on iterating and refining the AI assistant to create a solution that would cater to students' needs. Working with insights provided by Team Member #1's research, I fine-tuned the AI assistant's capabilities, using natural language processing and machine learning to provide personalized support and explanations in the students' preferred languages.
