Problem

Supporting immigrant-origin first year college students to strengthen their academic writing can be a challenging task. These students often face language barriers and cultural differences that can hinder their ability to succeed academically. As an educator, I wanted to create learning materials that would engage these students and provide them with practical tips to improve their academic writing skills.

However, creating effective learning materials can be time-consuming and requires a lot of effort. I needed a solution that would allow me to create engaging and informative materials quickly and efficiently.

Solution

To address this challenge, I decided to use Gen Ai tools to create three different types of learning materials. The first material is a story, created using StoryBird.ai, about a first-generation U.S immigrant-origin student who was admitted to their dream college and is on a journey to improving their academic writing. This story provides relatable experiences for the students and encourages them not to give up on their dreams.

The second material is a slide deck, created using Gamma App, on the importance of Bilingual College Level Academic Writing Support for Immigrant-Origin Students. This slide deck provides practical tips such as using online resources like Grammarly or seeking help from peer tutors at the writing center.

The third and last academic material is an Ai generated image, created using Leonardo app, of a young adult Latina student, who is confident in her learning capabilities. This image serves as inspiration for the students by showing them someone who looks like them succeeding academically.
