Problem
Another context in which I wanted to bring inclusive Social-Emotional Learning was undergraduate students in India. As both a college student and an educator, I noticed that many undergraduate students in India lack the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate sensitive topics such as sexual misconduct, safe sex practices, and respecting boundaries. This can lead to uncomfortable and unsafe learning environments-- which hinder the learning of all students but mostly students that come from minorities. Traditional teaching methods have not been effective in addressing these issues. In India, discussing sexual activity and boundaries can be taboo, which leads children misinformed or uninformed. When students are newly introduced to the freedom and exposure that college settings bring, they require guidance or they may find it difficult to navigate safely.
I saw a need for a new approach that would engage students and provide them with practical skills to handle these situations. I wanted to tinker with how technology could play a role in making my approach more effective. With the help of AI, I created a tech-integrated workshop on sexual communication.
Solution
I developed an innovative workshop that combines in-person facilitation with AI coaching. The workshop is designed to be delivered during orientation week for first-year undergraduate students in India.
The workshop covers three main areas:
student code of conduct regarding sexual misconduct,
safe sex practices, and
respecting boundaries.
To make the workshop engaging and interactive, I developed assessments that allow learners to practice applying what they have learned in real-life scenarios. Learners receive feedback from the AI coach on their responses, allowing them to refine their skills further.
