Problem

High school graduation rates are an important indicator of a student's success and future opportunities. However, there is a significant disparity in graduation rates among different racial and socioeconomic groups. Our team wanted to investigate whether race and socioeconomic factors have an impact on graduation rates in California high schools.

We found that there was a lack of research on this topic specifically in California, which prompted us to conduct our own study. We wanted to determine if there was a correlation between the percentage of minority students and low-income students in high school districts and their respective graduation rates.

Solution

To address this problem, we utilized R to perform statistical tests and model a multiple linear regression on the data we collected from California high schools. We analyzed data from over 500 high school districts across the state, including information on their graduation rates, percentage of minority students, and percentage of low-income students.

After analyzing the data, we found that there was indeed a correlation between race and socioeconomic factors with graduation rates. Specifically, we found that higher percentages of minority students and low-income students were associated with lower graduation rates. Our findings suggest that addressing these disparities should be a priority for policymakers and educators in California.
