Challenge

Our client, a perinatal cooperative provider, was facing a problem of having multiple data sets containing the same person represented in different ways. This made it difficult for them to understand their clients better and make client-centered business decisions. They needed a master record that could identify unique individuals across all data sets.

We analyzed the situation and found that defining business rules on common fields, assigning value/importance to them, and then matching them based on those rules could create one master record of unique individuals. However, this was easier said than done as there were many challenges involved in the process.

Solution

To solve the problem, we created data libraries of the disparate data sets. Our team worked with the client to define business rules on common fields such as name, address, phone number, etc., assigned value/importance to them based on their relevance and uniqueness, and then matched them based on those rules to create one master record of unique individuals.

We used Splink to run fuzzy matching to dedup and group individuals who identified as the same person as defined by the business rules which created a master record. We could then use this to create data dashboards of unique individuals that our client could use to make client-centered business decisions. The app allowed our client to access all relevant information about their clients from one place and make informed decisions quickly.
