Problem

A small town in Uganda was facing a major problem of menstrual related absenteeism among girls. The lack of proper menstrual hygiene management facilities in schools forced girls to miss school during their periods. This led to a significant drop in their academic performance and eventually, many of them dropped out of school altogether.

The situation worsened when the town didn't have access to electricity. Without electricity, it was impossible for the schools to provide proper sanitation facilities and lighting. This made it even harder for girls to manage their periods and attend school regularly.

Solution

A researcher arrived at the town's library and started looking into the issue of menstrual related absenteeism. She brought with her rewashable pads which were distributed among the girls in schools. This helped them manage their periods better and attend school regularly.

Later, a couple started a menstrual pad company which provided affordable sanitary pads to the girls in the town. They also worked towards bringing electricity to the town by partnering with an NGO that specialized in rural electrification projects. With electricity, schools were able to provide proper sanitation facilities and lighting which made it easier for girls to manage their periods and attend school regularly.
