Problem

We were tasked with revamping a new teacher program. The program had low participation rates, and many teachers felt excluded from the program. We needed to create a new structure that would be more flexible, inclusive, and provide new learning opportunities.

Our first step was to consult with a diversity expert. She helped us develop a perspective to better recognize language concerns. She alerted us to the fact that even the program name could be discouraging to new members.

After conducting research and speaking with teachers who previously participated in the program, we discovered that many teachers did not participate because they felt excluded due to the name of the program. Additionally, many teachers found it challenging to attend all of the sessions due to their busy schedules. They needed to feel welcome, the value to them, and how it could fit into extremely busy new teacher timeline.

Solution

We decided to change the name of the program to something more inclusive and welcoming. The name could not be more simple "New Teacher Program." Some of the modules were specifically inclusivity focused. We also created a flexible structure that allowed for virtual participation and provided additional learning opportunities outside of traditional classroom settings.

The new program included online and in person sessions. The online sessions were topic related and would bring value to their current and future jobs. We added in person social events for participants to meet other new teachers and build relationships outside of the classroom.

Impact

Participation doubled with the new name and structure
New learning opportunities provided through online modules increased knowledge retention
Social events helped build relationships among participants with massive participation success. The room was packed.
